Microsoft Teams Rooms Basic vs. Pro – Which One’s Right for You?

If you're a Microsoft Teams user, you'll know of Microsoft Teams Rooms. It’s a conference room device that helps you and your team collaborate and communicate.

Microsoft announced that they were retiring Teams Rooms Standard and Premium and introduced the new Teams Rooms Basic and Teams Rooms Pro on September 6, 2022 (see announcement here).

In this blog post, we'll give you the details on the differences in features and pricing between the two and how you can add each one to your licenses.

Get Your License

Before we get too far ahead of ourselves, we should clear up the fact that Teams Rooms Standard and Premium are now known as Teams Rooms legacy licenses. If you were lucky enough to get a license before the announcement, you can continue to use these licenses up until their expiration date.

If not, you'll have to opt for Teams Rooms Pro or Teams Rooms Basic - the only two options available from now on.

So, what's the change on these new licenses?

Teams Rooms Basic is free on any Teams Room certified device and can be added to up to 25 conference rooms. It includes basic meeting capabilities like joining meetings with one touch and calendar integration.

But, it doesn't have some of the fancier features that Teams Rooms Pro has - like proximity detection and people recognition, whiteboarding, and content camera.

Teams Rooms Pro, on the other hand, is a paid license that comes with all the bells and whistles we just mentioned. It's designed for larger conference rooms and supports multiple displays, large-scale deployments, and custom branding.

If you were using the legacy license previously, it is recommended that you switch to Teams Room Pro because it includes the features from Teams Room Standard and Premium.

Adding Teams Licenses to Your Account

Adding Teams Rooms Basic is simple - just go to your Microsoft 365 admin portal, then Billing/Purchase Services. Under the solutions partner, click View Products under Purchase from Microsoft.

In the search bar, type in Teams Rooms Basic, and then click Details under Collaboration and Communication. Add the quantity you want, and then click Buy. Easy.

Adding Teams Rooms Pro is a bit different, though. You'll need to reach out to a Microsoft representative for pricing and deployment options, which you can do through Opkalla by simply calling us at (704) 389-5635 or emailing [email protected].

Get Started on Your Next Meeting

There you have it - Teams Rooms Basic is totally free, you can get it online right away, and it’s workable for up to 25 conference rooms.

In contrast, Teams Rooms Pro comes at a small price, but you’ll get a full license, with all the fancy features. What’s more is that it’s designed for larger conference rooms, so no more turning people away at the door.
