Microsoft 365 Copilot is transforming how we work, and Copilot Chat is here to make it accessible to even more businesses. Whether researching industry insights, analyzing data, or seeking innovative solutions, organizations can leverage Copilot Chat to increase efficiency and find new ways to get their work done through AI.
So, what exactly does Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat do, and who can use it? Let’s break it down.
Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat (formerly Microsoft Copilot for Entra account users) is an AI assistant available to licensed Microsoft 365 users, even those without a Copilot license. With a UI designed for work and education, it includes a variety of features, such as:
Since January 2025, the Copilot experiences for work and personal use no longer share the same name. Microsoft 365 Copilot and Copilot Chat are for work and educational use, while Microsoft Copilot is for personal use. Although Copilot Chat cannot retrieve organizational content independently like Copilot, organizational content can be used in prompts and by agents to access and generate data.
Copilot Chat can be accessed at m365copilot.com or within Microsoft apps like Copilot, Teams, and Outlook.
As stated above, a Microsoft 365 Copilot license is not needed to access Copilot Chat. Entra account users with any of the following licenses can use Copilot Chat at no additional cost:
In short, if your organization has the right licenses and settings in place, your team can start taking advantage of Copilot Chat.
To enable and manage Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat for users, admins must ensure that eligible users have the appropriate licenses. Additionally, access to Copilot Chat is controlled through Microsoft 365 Apps admin center and Teams admin center settings. Admins can generate usage reports, ensure easy access to Copilot Chat, and ensure that users are connected to essential Microsoft 365 services.
It is also important to note that Copilot Chat includes Zero Trust security recommendations and allows for protection of users, devices, and some app data.
