What is Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat?

Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat (formerly Microsoft Copilot for Entra account users) is an AI assistant available to licensed Microsoft 365 users, even those without a Copilot license. With a UI designed for work and education, it includes a variety of features, such as:

  • Web-grounded chat - Powered by GPT-4o, Copilot Chat can pull information from the web, helping to provide industry insights and inspire strategy.
  • Agents - An agent is a system that can autonomously perform tasks and collect information using AI. Agents are accessible right in the chat and can be used to automate repetitive tasks, increasing efficiency in your organization. Agents are priced on a pay-as-you-go metered basis.
  • File uploads and image generation - Inputting files into Copilot Chat can help summarize information, enhance PowerPoint presentations, easily compile Excel spreadsheets, and more. Additionally, AI image generation can be used for marketing and campaigning.
  • Copilot Pages - Pages allow for real-time collaboration between users and AI, acting as another boost to efficiency.

Since January 2025, the Copilot experiences for work and personal use no longer share the same name. Microsoft 365 Copilot and Copilot Chat are for work and educational use, while Microsoft Copilot is for personal use. Although Copilot Chat cannot retrieve organizational content independently like Copilot, organizational content can be used in prompts and by agents to access and generate data.

Copilot Chat can be accessed at m365copilot.com or within Microsoft apps like Copilot, Teams, and Outlook.

Managing Access and Deployment

To enable and manage Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat for users, admins must ensure that eligible users have the appropriate licenses. Additionally, access to Copilot Chat is controlled through Microsoft 365 Apps admin center and Teams admin center settings. Admins can generate usage reports, ensure easy access to Copilot Chat, and ensure that users are connected to essential Microsoft 365 services.
